FAQs

What is immersive experience design?

Immersive experience design blends architecture, art, lighting, sound, and digital technologies to create environments that engage people sensorially and emotionally. At IMO we design spaces that tell stories, encourage interaction, and change how people perceive place.

What kinds of projects does Immersive Material Office (IMO) work on?

We create public art, interactive exhibits, experiential retail, workplace activations, wayfinding systems, and large-scale installations that combine physical craft with digital integration (projection, AR, spatial audio).

Do you fabricate and install artwork in-house?

We lead design, engineering coordination, and installation management but subcontract fabrication and certain trades to trusted local fabricators and installers to ensure the highest quality and compliance.

Where are you located and do you work internationally?

IMO is based in San Francisco and works with public and private clients across the U.S. and internationally. We travel for site visits, community engagement, and installation coordination.

How do you approach public art and community engagement?

Every project begins with research and stakeholder workshops. We prioritize context—history, culture, and community needs—so the artwork amplifies local voices and invites participation.

What technologies do you use in interactive installations?

We integrate projection mapping, AR, XR, spatial audio, sensor networks, IoT, haptics, and generative visuals. We always select tech to serve the narrative and user experience, not the other way around.

How do you ensure long-term durability and maintenance for public artworks?

We specify durable materials, protective finishes, and accessible maintenance details. We also provide conservation recommendations and coordinate with fabricators and conservators to ensure longevity in real-world climates.

Can you design immersive retail experiences and brand activations?

Yes. We design on-brand retail environments and pop-up activations that increase dwell time, improve conversion, and create memorable tactile moments that connect customers to product stories.

What is your process and typical timeline for a public art or installation project?

Our process typically includes: research & visioning, concept design, engineering coordination, fabrication oversight, and installation & activation. Timelines vary by scope but range from 3–6 months for small installations to 12+ months for major public works.

How do you measure the success of an immersive project?

We define KPIs up front—dwell time, visitor engagement, social amplification, NPS, and economic impact—and use observational studies, sensors, and analytics to evaluate outcomes and refine the experience.

Do you work with local artists, fabricators, and contractors?

Of course! We prefer local partnerships to help strengthen community impact and streamline fabrication logistics. Local collaboration also helps us support regional economies and ensure culturally relevant outcomes. While local is always our first choice, certain projects require unique skillsets that aren’t available in every region; in which case we have to prioritize the quality of work and leverage our network of talented makers.

Can IMO integrate AR/VR/XR into physical installations?

Absolutely. We design hybrid experiences where AR and XR extend the physical narrative—adding layers of story, personalization, and interactivity while remaining intuitive for visitors.

How do budgets typically break down for immersive installations?

Budgets depend on scale, materials, technology, and site work. We provide phased budgets early in the design process—concept, design development, engineering, fabrication, and installation—so stakeholders can make informed decisions.

Do you provide accessibility and ADA-compliant design?

Yes. Accessibility and inclusive design are core to our practice. We design experiences that work for a wide range of ages, abilities, and sensory preferences while complying with relevant codes and standards.

How do I start a project with IMO?

Email us or book a free 45-minute strategy session to discuss goals, site context, budget range, and timeline. We’ll propose a scoped next step—typically a discovery workshop or small feasibility study.
